About Historic Hale House

from reviews

The Historic Hale House is the summertime home of Edward Everett Hale and his family. Built in 1873, it served as the family gathering place for decades and became the center of a vibrant summer colony.

The Hale House honors Hale’s life and work and the deep affection he had for southern Rhode Island. The house was intentionally designed and built for seasonal occupancy as a summer house in the foothills of the Matunuck moraine with commanding views of the ocean across the Matunuck coastal plain of open farmland. Bordering an inland spring-fed pond, the property also features an 1877 boat house. The Matunuck Preservation Society, which operates the house, invites all interested people to visit during the summer season.

My spouse & I totally enjoyed our tour of the Hale House. The Mattunuck Preservation Society & S. Kingstown Land Trust tour guides - Jane & Deb- were extremely informative, very kind to us & alot of fun to be with. While the house is not yet completely furnished or entirely accessible, we learned a great deal about Everett Edward Hale and his kids, sister & friends. We also enjoyed the 1st & 2nd floor rooms & the 3 art galleries within. The landscape surrounding the renovated house and the views of the lake are beautiful. We also got to view the amazing animals living there on the landscape by being shown them on an engaging video that displayed minks, fishers, otters, red foxes, coyotes, bobcats, raccoons, wood duck, blue herons, horned owls & red tail hawks. Loved that. I definitely recommend this whole experience.
